Several problems can result from overproduction of milk in a female cow. Mastitis is the painful swelling of mammary glands, they are manipulated with hormones and antibiotics to produce maximum amounts of use, and because they are hooked up to machines so much, they often suffer from cuts on their utters, which leads to pus and blood particle in the milk we drink. Many products are labeled "free range" or "organic", however, due to regulations and actual enforcement of regulations, it is difficult to determine which are truly organic and free range. All forms of cruelty are not necessarily stopped just because they are labeled as "free range" or "organic". Debeaking (removal of beak), tail-docking (removal of tail), ear-notching (slicing of ear skin), and dehorning (removal of horns), all still exist in factory farms today.
Tail Docking
Ear NotchingSwitching to a vegetarian has never been healthier, tastier, and easier. It allows you to touch the earth gently, while being compassionate of all its inhabitants. There are many great vegetarian options today. Whether you are going vegetarian because of the environment, health reasons, or animal cruelty, you have the power to change the world, just by changing what is on your plate.

It is reasons like this that I do not like eating meat. I hate how they have the animals in small areas so that they stay small. I think that animals should have plenty of room to move around. I don't really like how they have to be cages up anyways, but they should have a lot of space if they are going to be. I also don't like how all the pollution is being put into the air, water, and meat. Its sad that they deprive all the animals of exercise so that they produce more meat.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Matt! After almost 4 years of being vegetarian I believe I have never been healthier and more energetic. And I am so glad I made the switch from regular milk to soy, hemp and coconut milk. They're better tasting and better for you.
ReplyDeleteI deffinatly agree with you. So are you saying that the labels that have free range or organic are not really organic?
ReplyDeleteIt's so true that a lot of people thinking they are being more environmentally friendly and kinder by eating things labeled "organic". The truth is, is how do we really know if these products are what they say they are?
ReplyDeleteIt is scary to think that supposedly "organic" foods are not actually that. It is hard to find foods that are actually healthy and completely free of chemicals, pesticides, and who knows what else.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible!! I don't understand the point of taking the tails off it's just cruel! Labels need to be more clear or people need to be informed on what they really mean.
ReplyDeleteI hate factory farms. It's just that buying things from local farms that you know are free range is SO much more expensive and many people can't afford it. False advertising makes me really angry. I was noticing on my bath and body works shower gel that the bottle says "THIS FINAL PRODUCT IS NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS" but that bothers me because all of the individual parts of it were probably tested on animals.
ReplyDeleteThis is truly wrong to treat all these animals so bad. They need to be able to roam free( at least a little). I think it's so awful that they damage the cow udders because they hook them up for milk to often, this just shows that we consume too much. I will continue to eat all sorts of meat, my diet requires it, but I will think about what is going on to the animals I eat when I take a bite. I don't disagree about being a vegetarian, that's your choice.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everyone. I think instead of buying from big companies that are only in it to make the most money any way they can, we should get more of our food and dairy from small farms. Not only would this help small farmers, but it would also not make you contribute to this inhumane treatment.
ReplyDeleteI'm so thankful to live in Maine after reading this! I trust Oakhurst, and all the other dairy products that are produced in Maine. My mom makes sure she buys dairy from our state, and nothing from out of state. Also, its hard for me to care about these animals so much. A human can contribute to society, and meat and poultry can to, by sustaining us with protein and nourishment.
ReplyDeleteWe need to have more regulations regarding "free range" and "organic" The farms need to be watched over more. The heads of these farms should be arrested for animal cruelty.
ReplyDeleteIt is gross how mass production of meat, poultry and other products has created so many horrors. Organic is just a label so how can we really know what happens during closed doors? Great job Matt, some people out there want to uncover the horrible truth. This blog reminds me a lot of what we saw in Food Inc.
